The Battle of the Great War & Amiens

A program for all those interested in the First World War. Discover the main historical sites and memorials of the dreadful part of our history : Villers-Bretonneux, Albert, La Boisselle, Peronne, Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval, Pozières and Amiens.

A 3 days trip

Day 1 : Villers-Bretonneux

Morning :

10.00 am : Meet your guide in Amiens.
The Somme 1916 Museum in Albert : a visit of the diorama about the Great War, in the shelters of Albert : undergound galleries dug in the 16th century and turned into anti-aircraft shelters.

The Lochnagar Crater Great Mine in La Boisselle (the big explosion : the mine crater 100m in diameter and 30 meter deep).

Lunch near Albert (Authuile)

Afternoon

2.30 pm : Visit of the national Australian Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux (on the walls of this memorial you can find the name of the missing soldiers who have no known grave).

Visit of the Australian Museum and Victoria School (it illustrated the role of the Australian troup during the first world war). The Victoria School was rebuilt by Australia after the war. Continuation to Amiens (lay down your guide in Villers-Bretonneux).

Arrival at your hotel (2* hotel in the center of Amiens - according the availability).

Dinner in a restaurant in the old district of Amiens. Free spectacle : the magic colours of the cathedral of Amiens. A new way to discover the fabulous architecture of this Unesco site. Period : from 16th june to 15th september each evening.

Day 2 : the Great War

Morning

Breakfast

10.00 am : The courier guide welcomes you at the Museum of the Great War in Peronne. You will visit the Museum and the guide will explain the events and mentalities of these period from 1900 to 1922. An unique experience, the result of an historical research campaign carried out in France, Great Britain and Germany. The modern part of the museum was inserted into a very imposing fortification.

12.00 am : lunch at Rancourt

Afternoon

2.30 pm : Remambrance tour of the Great War with an english speaking guide. Go to the Newfoundland Memorial Park of Beaumont-Hamel (a preserve site of the Great War with the newfoundland and german trenches and between them the no man's land, with its caribou overlooking the trenches), Thiepval, the major Memorial of the Battle of the Somme and his 72 000 missing soldiers, Pozières tank memorial (four small bronzes are models of the tank that were used in 1916)..

Lay down your guide in Peronne.

Dinner in a restaurant close to the cathedral and accommodation in your hotel in Amiens.

Day 3 : Amiens

In the morning :

Breakfast

A conducted visit in a flat-bottomed boat in the Amiens floating gardens "Hortillonnages" on the branches of the rivers Somme.

Guided visit of the cathedral Notre Dame of Amiens (the biggest cathedral in France)

Lunch in Amiens in a restaurant of the center of the town.

286€ (about 395 AUD) per person with a minimum of 30 persons

The price includes : conducted tours, courier guide, ride on the tourist train, meals (with drinks), accommodation in double rooms, breakfast, extra : no charge for the driver and tour leader for a minimum of 30 persons

The price does not include : transport, insurance, tips, extra charge for single room : 42 to 48€ per person and per night. Taxe : 0.80€/night
